Passionate vegetarian conversation

It amazes me how people can have such different opinions about a single subject and more to the point how passionate those opinions can become. Vegetarianism is one discussion I’ve found which tends to get passionate, as does religion of course.

I recently asked for opinions on vegetarianism, genuinely to learn a little more but instead of being provided with rational discussion, I was bombarded with some folks demanding I become a vegetarian and telling me why I had to do what they wanted. Gentle, tactful discussion suggesting alternative viewpoints was dismissed, not with tact, but with outright rudeness and a blatant and obvious hatred for anyone who disagreed. I was shocked that the discussion degenerated into a shouting match in which I remained as observer, gobsmacked by the passionate disregard for rationality. The viewpoint that we can respect the right of others to have a different viewpoint flew straight out the window and instead it was “my way or the highway”.

So what did I learn from this conversation? 1. Never ask for a discussion on vegetarianism! 2. Never get involved in that discussion because you are expected to take sides and fight passionately for it, even if all you wanted to do was just learn a little more about all the complexities of the process.

What a shame you came across a some zealots in a quest to enquire about vegatarianism. It is unfortunate that some people cannot be open to other peoples views or have civilised discussions.

And this is only a topic about food. No wonder some people don’t like to talk politics or religion.
